
Aspartame
Aspartame [L-aspartyl-L-phenylalanine methyl ester] is a dipeptide composed primarily of two amino acids, phenylalanine, and aspartic acid. These, and other amino acids, are natural constituents of protein-containing foods consumed in any healthful diet. Aspartame is an artificial, non-saccharide sweetener commonly used as a sugar substitute in foods and beverages.
